One more generation — Andrew's mother's side (2026-11-08)

Goal: find the parents of the furthest-back people on the Barr / Oliver / Utt / Brewer / Bates / Kile / Bellard / White lines. Sources: WV Archives vital records (VRR, images saved), FamilySearch index (ark links given).

Person Parents found Verdict Evidence
John Jackson Bates (1834–1897) Andrew Bates and Delilah CONFIRMED Doddridge death register 1897, line 8: John J. Bates, d. 22 Oct 1897, Lyon, farmer; parents "Andrew & Delilah"; informant Ruth Bates, wife (VRR 5047234). Also the 1852 marriage below
Ruth Mary "Jerusha" Cavalier (Bates) John Calver [Cavalier] CONFIRMED (father) Doddridge register of marriage licences, 8 Dec 1852: John J. Bates (20) and Mary R. Calver (22); parents "Andw Bates" and "John Calver"; Doddridge County (VRR 11789583). "Mary R. Calver" = Ruth Mary Cavalier. Confirms the compiled sheet's Andrew Bates and John Cavalier; the mothers' names (Delila Swiger, Prianna Devers) are still only from the sheet, though "Delilah" matches
George W. Kile (1826–1899) — NOT FOUND Doddridge death register 1899 (VRR 5047752): George W. Kile, 73y 7m 5d, b. Harrison Co, laborer, gastric cancer, buried Underwood Cemetery — no parents column filled
Sarah "Sally" Underwood (Kile) probably Dixon Underwood SUPPORTED Tyler Co marriage bond, 3 Dec 1847: George W. Kile (his mark) and Dixon Underwood bound for the marriage of George W. Kile and Sarah Underwood (VRR 12050196). Dixon Underwood married Keziah Baker in Tyler Co, 1821 (FamilySearch WV Marriages FB14-48V) — right age to be Sarah's parents; the bond doesn't say "father"
J. J. (Jerrimiah / Jacob J.) Oliver (b. ~1830–33) probably Samuel C. Oliver (b. ~1790 NJ) and Hester (b. ~1809 PA) SUPPORTED 1850 census, Washington Twp, Greene Co PA (FamilySearch M4HJ-HMD): household of Samuel C. Oliver 60 (NJ), Hester 41, with Jacob I. Oliver 17, Isaac I. 21, Samuel C. 16, Susan 13, Ann E. 10, George W. 8, Charles T. 1. 1860, same township (MXP1-3WC): J. J. Oliver 30, Nancy 26, Elizabeth 6, Hesther A. 4, Samuel L. 0 — the same family as 1870 Aleppo (Elizabeth 15, Hester Anne 13). Daughter Hester and son Samuel named after Samuel C. and Hester. Also: the 1910 census has a Jacob J. Oliver b. 1832 PA with wife Catharine in Center Dist, Wetzel — matches J. J.'s 1913 death with wife Catharine. So J. J. is probably Jacob J., son of Samuel C. and Hester. ("Jerrimiah" in the 1870 index and "Jerry" in a WV death index stay unexplained.)
Nancy Tharp (Oliver) (b. ~1833 PA) — NOT FOUND No Nancy Tharp in the 1850 Greene Co census index; an Abner Tharp household (Franklin Twp, 1850) has daughters Charlotte, Caroline, Permelia but no Nancy
Nicholas Barr Sr (~1809–1888) — NOT FOUND Wetzel death index 1888 (VRR 4897557): Nicholas Barr, 79, West Fork Fishing Creek, paralysis — parents column blank. Find a Grave: Shreve Cemetery, Pine Grove. Nothing earlier in the index
Sarah "Sally" Jones (Barr) — NOT FOUND Only appears as mother on her son William's death record
David Bellard / Ballard (b. 1837 PA) — NOT FOUND 1860 census, District 7 Monongalia (FamilySearch M41L-Q9W): David Ballard 23 b. PA, with Melinda 29, Daniel G. 4, James W. 1, Charity Cross 8 — his own household; no death record in VRR (1912–16)
Henry Utt (b. ~1815–19) and Rebecca Lewis (1822–1895) — NOT FOUND Index has only the 1850/1860/1870 households and his Civil War service record; a Henry Utt b. 1819 Warren Co NJ (parents John and Elez…) is a different man. No Rebecca Utt death in VRR 1894–96
William Brewer (1812–1892) and Letha Ann McCoy (1814–1890) — NOT FOUND No death records in VRR 1888–94; no Letha Brewer of that age in the FamilySearch index
Sarah A. Devine (Brewer) — NOT FOUND No matching Sarah Devine in the 1850/1860 Virginia census index (Loudoun and Marshall hits are other people)
Mary White (b. ~1823 MD) — NOT FOUND Not searched further beyond the 1860 Wetzel household (no husband present)
